Definition of "Pharyngitis"

Pharyngitis (from Greek "pharynx" meaning "throat", and "itis" meaning "inflammation) is inflammation of the pharynx (i.e. region in the back of the throat).

Sx
  • Quite painful throat
  • Very large tonsils, which can cause trouble swallowing and breathing
  • Cough
  • Fever, especially if caused by a systemic infection
Pathophysiology
  • Mostly caused by viral infection (60%), with the remainder caused by bacterial or fungal infections, or irritants (e.g. pollutants, chemical substances)
Tx
  • Sx relief
  • Bacterial or fungal causes can be Tx with antibiotics or antifungals, if identified
Prognosis
  • Can be chronic or acute
Epidemiology
  • Most common cause of a sore throat
