Pharyngitis (from Greek "pharynx" meaning "throat", and "itis" meaning "inflammation) is inflammation of the pharynx (i.e. region in the back of the throat).
Sx
Quite painful throat
Very large tonsils, which can cause trouble swallowing and breathing
Cough
Fever, especially if caused by a systemic infection
Pathophysiology
Mostly caused by viral infection (60%), with the remainder caused by bacterial or fungal infections, or irritants (e.g. pollutants, chemical substances)
Tx
Sx relief
Bacterial or fungal causes can be Tx with antibiotics or antifungals, if identified
