Rifamycin are abx synthesized either naturally by the bacterium Amycolaptosis rifamycinica or artificially. It includes:

  • Rifampicin (or rifampin)
  • Rifabutin
  • Rifapentine
  • Rifalazil
Purpose
  •  It is particularly effective against mycobacteria, and is thus used to Tx:
    • TB (tuberculosis)
    • Leprosy
    • Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections
