EBV (Epstein-Barr virus, aka HHV-4) is a virus.

Disease

It causes:

  • Infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever), best known
  • Particular cancers, e.g.:
    • Hodgkin's lymphoma
    • Burkitt's lymphoma
    • Gastric cancer
    • Nasopharyngeal carcinoma
    • Conditions associated w/ HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), e.g. hairy leukoplakia and CNS lymphomas

It is associated w/ a higher risk of:

  • Certain autoimmune diseases, especially:
    • Dermatomyositis
    • SLE
    • Rheumatoid arthritis
    • Sjogren's syndrome
    • MS
Epidemiology
  • 1 of the most common viruses in humans
  • 200k cancer cases epr year are thought to be attributable to EBV
