Dengue fever (aka breakbone fever) is a mosquito-borne tropical disease, caused by the dengue virus.

• Fever
• Headache
• Muscle and joint pains
• Characteristic skin rash, that is morbiliform (i.e. similar to measles)

• Dengue hemorrhagic fever, which is life threatening, in a small proportion of cases, resulting in bleeding, thrombocytopenia (i.e. low levels of blood platelets), and blood plasma leakage
• Dengue shock syndrome, where shock (i.e. decreased end organ perfusion) occurs
