Barbiturate are CNS depresants, that can produce a spectrum of effect.

  • Phenobarbital (aka Phenobarbitone), a long-acting barbiturate, used widely as an antiepileptic medication

Effects
  • From mild sedation to total anesthesia
  • Anxiolytics
  • Hypnotics
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Analgesic effect, but these are somewhat weak, preventing it from being used in surgery
Indications
  • Barbiturates are now largely replaced by benzodiazepines, because of their safer overdose profile
  • However, it is still used for:
    • General anesthesia
    • Epilepsy
    • Tx of acute migraines and cluster headaches (under stringent protocols, and monitoring for addiction and abuse)
    • Assisted suicide and euthanasia (where legal)
Side effects
  • Addiction potential, both physical and psychological
