Definition of "Agenesis"

Agenesis is the failure of an organ to develop during embryogenic growth and development, due to the absence of primordial tissue.

Classification

Depending on the organ affected:

  • Agenesis of the corpus callosum, failure of the corpus callosum to develop
  • Renal agenesis, failure ot 1 or both of the kidneys to develop
  • Phocomelia, failure of the arms or legs to develop
  • Penile agenesis, failure of penis to develop
  • Mullerian agenesis, failure of the uterus and part of the vagina to develop
  • Agenesis of the gallbladder, failure of the gallbladder to develop. A patient may not realize they have this condition unless they undergo srugery or medical imaging, since the gallbladder is netiehr externally visible nor essential
  • Eye agenesis, where patients are born with no eyes
  • Dental and oral agenesis, including:
    • Anodontia [vera], absence of all primary or permanent teeth
    • Aglossia, partial or complete absence of the tongue
    • Agnathia (aka hypognathous), is absence of a portion of entirity of 1 or both jaws. It is very rare
  • Ear agenesis, where patients are born without ears
