Definition of "Urinary urgency"

Urinary urgency is a sudden compelling urge to urinate.

Cause
  • Irritation/inflammation of the bladder wall (urothelium), including:
    • Interstitial cystitis → urinary frequency + urgency + nocturia + dyspareunia
Risk factors
  • It tends to increase with age
  • Exacerbated by consumption of diuretics (caffeine particularly coffee/tea, soda, fruit juice especially cranberry juice)
Tx
  • Behavioral techniques
  • Anticholinergics
Associations
  • It is often associated with urinary incontinence, polyuria, nocturia, and interstitial cystitis
Prognosis
  • When uncontrollable, can cause urinary incontinence
