Definition of "Tracheitis"

Tracheitis is a bacterial infection of the trachea/windpipe.

Sx
  • SOB
  • Stridor
  • Intercostal retraction
  • Flu-like Sx (high fever, deep cough)
Pathophysiology
  • Most often caused by the bacteria Staph aureus
  • Often follows a recent viral URTI
  • Mostlya ffects young kids since a small trachea is easily blocked by swelling
Ix
  • Blood oxygen
  • Nasopharyngeal culture for bacteria
  • Tracheal culture for bacteria
  • X-ray of the trachea
Tx
  • ABC's, including oxygenation w/ an endotracheal tube
  • IV abx
Complications
  • Airway obstruction, which can cause death
  • Toxic shock syndrome, if caused by Staph
Prognosis
  • It is a medical emergency
