Definition of "Hypotension"

Last modified: less than a minute

Hypotension is low BP (i.e. force of blood pushing against walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood), especially in the arteries of the systemic circulation. It is a physiological state (cf a disease).

Sx
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
Dx
  • Systolic BP<90mmHg, or diastolic <60mmHg
  • In practice, BP is considered too low only if noticeable Sx are present
  • Children compensate well when there is inadequate circulation, so low BP is a late Sx

Patient information

So blood pressure is usually 120/80, but when do we say it's too low?
If it's below 90/60. Note that we let it drop more than it rises. Because we say that high blood pressure is >140/90. So we let it drop more than it rises.

Cause
  • Sign of good health and fitness, in Pt's who exercise and are in top physical condition
  • Indicate serious heart, endocrine or neurological disorders
  • Orthostatic hypotension
Complications
  • Shock, often associated of it, although not necessarily indicative of it, as severe hypotension can deprive the brain and other vital organs of oxygen and nutrients, causing this life threatening condition
