Functional incontinence is when a Pt recognizes the need to urinate, but for physical or mental reasons are unable to get to the toilet. The loss of urine can very, from small leakages, to full emptying of the bladder

Cause
  • Confusion
  • Dementia, Alzheimer's disease
  • Poor eyesight
  • Impaired mobility or dexterity
  • Unwillingness to go to toilet because of depression/anxiety
  • Stroke
  • Aging, as many causes are associated with conditions that affect older patients
  • Inebriation due to alcohol
  • Non-medical causes:
    • No toilet or suitable alternative nearby
    • Access to a toilet is restricted or prohibited
