Frequent urination is the need to urinate more often than usual.

Dx
  • Normality varies according to age, typical ranges include:
    • In young children, 8-14 times per day
    • In older children, 6-12 times per day
    • In teenagers, 4-6 times per day
Causes
  • Polyuria (increased urine production), including:
    • DM
    • Pregnancy
  • Disturbance along the urinary tract:
    • UTI, with frequent urination being a classic Sx → inflammation reduces the bladder's capacity to hold urine
    • Prostate problems
    • Interstitial cystitis
    • Overactive bladder
    • Prostatitis
    • Bladder cancer
    • Stroke and other neurological disease
Associations
  • It is often associated with urinary incontinence and polyuria (large volume of urine)
