Contraceptive implants is a type of birth control, that is a small flexible rod/tube measuring about 4cm in length inserted under the skin, typically in the upper arm. It is among the most effective birth control methods.
Examples
Etonogestrel contraceptive implant (Implanon), which is a single-rod subdermal contraceptive implant, that is inserted just under the skin of a woman’s upper arm and contains etonogestrel. It is a type of long-acting reversible contraception, the most effective form of birth control. Implanon NXT has an additional 15mg of barium sulfate added to its core so it is detectable by x-ray. It also has a pre-loaded applicator for easier insertion. Subdermal contraceptive implants are now used by 11m women around the world and approved for use in over 60 countries as of 2003.
Purpose
It is among the most effective birth control methods
It can prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years, but LESS if overweight
However, it doesn't protect gainst STI's
Women have fewer, lighter periods
30% women have no more bleeding periods, a Sx of total efficacy
Can be used whilst breastfeeding
May lessen typical PMS Sx
Method
It prevents pregnancy by releasing hormones that prevents ovaries from releasing eggs and by thickening cervical mucus
Side effects
Many of these side effects are reversible by removal of the implant, and switching to another form of birth control if the side effects become a problem, including:
