Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a 10-item questionnaire developed to identify women who have postpartum depression. Items on the scale correspond to various clinical depression Sx (e.g. guilt feeling, sleep disturbance, low energy, anhedonia, and suicidal ideation)

Interpretation
  • Score is added up for each of the 10 items, with higher scores indicating more depression Sx
Indications
  • May be used within 8 weeks postpartum
  • Can also be applied for depression screening during pregnancy
Epidemiology
  • Widely used screening tool, adapted and validated in many languages
