Bronchitis is inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchi (i.e. medium to large sized airways of the lungs).

Classification
Acute bronchitis, which is characterized by the development of a cough, or a small sensation in the back of the throat, with or without sputum (i.e. coughed up mucus). It often occurs during the course of an acute viral illness (e.g. common cold, influenza) (90%), or bacteria (10%)
Chronic bronchitis, a type of COPD characterized by a productive cough lasting for 3 months or more per year, for at least 2 years. Chronic bronchitis usually develops due to recurrent injury to the airways, caused by inhaled irritants. The most common cause is smoking, followed by chemical lung irritants, and immunocompromised
Epidemiology
Acute bronchitis is one of the most comon diseases, with 5% of adults, and 6% of children having at least 1 episode each year
COPD affects 329 million people, or nearly 5% of the population. It results in 2.9 million deaths worldwide, and this number is increasing
