Adrenaline (aka epinephrine) is drug used for numerous conditions.

Indications
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Superficial bleeding
  • Croup, when it is inhaled
  • Asthma, when other Tx not effective
MOA
  • Can be given IV, IM, inhalation, or injection just under the skin
  • Normally produced by both the adrenal glands, and certain neurons
  • Plays important role in the fight-or-flight response by increasing blood flow to muscles, output to the heart, pupil dilation, and blood sugar
  • It does this by its effects on alpha and beta receptors
Side effects
  • Shakiness
  • Anxiety
  • Sweating
  • Fast HR, occasionally
  • HTN, occasionally
  • Cardiac arrhythmia, occasionally
  • Safety of its use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is unclear, but the benefits to the mother must be considered
Epidemiology
  • The Japanese chemist Jokichi Takamine 1st isolated it in 1901
  • Wholesale cost is between $0.10-0.95 USD a vial
  • An autoinjector for anaphylaxis with epinephrine, costs about $600USD
