Definition of "Pyuria"

Pyuria is presence of WBC [or pus] in urine.

Dx
  • Pyuria is 6+ neutrophils per high power field of unspun, voided MSU. It can indicate:
    • Bacterial UTI
    • Sepsis
    • Older Pt's with pneumonia
  • Sterile pyuria is pyuria that appears "sterile" by standard culturing techniques. It is caused by:
    • STI's (e.g. gonorrhea) and viruses which won't grow in bacterial cultures
    • Side effect of medications, e.g. paracetamol
    • Kawasaki's disease
    • Genitourinary TB
