ARB (angiotensin receptor blocker, angiotensin 2 receptor antagonist, sartans) are drugs that modulate the RAAS.

Patient information

What is an ARB? Isn't arbing something to do with horse racing?
So ARB stands for angiotensin receptor blocker.

What is angiotensin?
Angiotensin is a component of the RAAS system, which is a system that tends to raise blood pressure. Specifically, it promotes the secretion of aldosterone.

Classification

Examples include:

  • Olmesartan [medoxomil], e.g. Sevikar which is olmesartan+ the CCB amlodipine
  • Irbesartan (Avapro)
  • Valsartan (Diovan)
  • Telmisartan (Micardis)
  • Losartan
  • Azilsartan
  • Fimasartan
  • Candesartan
  • Eprosartan

Patient information

What are some examples?
They all end in -sartan, which is why we sometimes call these drugs sartans.

Indications
  • HTN
  • Diabetic nephropathy (kdiney damage due to diabetes)
  • Congestive heart failure
MOA
  • Block the activation of angiotensin 2 receptors. Angiotensin 2 is involved with:
    • Vasoconstriction, thus causing vasodilation
    • Secretion of ADH, thus reduces this
    • Produces and secretes aldosterone, thus reduces this
  • The combined effect reduces BP
