Intensive care unit (ICU) is a department of a hospital (or health care facility) that provides intensive care. It caters to Pt's with most severe and life-threatening illnesses and injuries, requiring constant, close monitoring and support from specialist equipment and medications, to ensure normal bodily functions. It is staffed by highly trained doctors and critical care nurses, who specialize in caring for seriously ill Pt's. Common conditions Tx in ICU's include trauma, multiple organ failure, and sepsis. ICU Pt's are usually transferred from ED, or from a ward if they rapidly deteriorate, or immediately after surgery if the Pt is at high risk of complications.

NICU (Neonatal intensive care unit, aka intensive care nursery ICN) is an ICU specializing in the care of ill or premature newborn infants. It is directed by one or more neonatologists and staffed by resident physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physician assistants, and respiratory therapists.
