Endoscopy refers to the use of an endoscope to examine the interior of a hollow organ (or cavity). Endoscopes are inserted directly into the organ. There are various types of endoscopes depending on the site and type of procedure. The Pt may be fully conscious or under general anesthetic.

• GI tract, including:
  • Panendoscopy is used to look at the voice box, gullet, mouth, nose and tongue
  • Esophagus, stomach (gastroscopy) and duodenum (esophagogastroduodenoscopy)
  • Small intestine (enteroscopy)
  • Large intestine/colon (colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy)
  • Magnification endoscopy
  • Bile duct, including ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) is the use of endoscopy with fluoroscopy, to Dx problems of the biliary or pancreatic ducts, including gallstones, scars (e.g. IBD), leaks (e.g. trauma, surgery), and cancer. Through the endoscope, the Dr sees the inside of the stomach and duodenum, and injects radiographic contrast into the ducts in the biliary tree and pancreas, so they can be seen on x-rays
  • Rectum (rectoscopy) and anus (anoscopy), both also referred to as proctoscopy
• Respiratory tract, including:
  • Nose (rhinoscopy)
  • Lower respiratory tract (bronchoscopy)
• Ear (otoscope)
• Urinary tract (cystoscopy)
• Female reproductive system (gynoscopy)
  • Cervix (colposcopy)
  • Uterus (hysteroscopy)
  • Fallopian tubes (falloposcopy)
• Normally closed body cavities (through a small incision)
  • Abdominal or pelvic cavity (laparoscopy)
  • Interior of a joint (arthroscopy)
  • Organs of the chest (thoracoscopy and mediastinoscopy)
