Nasal endoscopy (rhinoscopy, nasoscopy, nasoendoscopy, sinus endoscopy) is the use of a rhinoscope (i.e. thin, tube-like instrument) to examine the inside of the nose.
Patient information
What is the nasal endoscopy?
Before we get to what that is, let's start with what endoscopy is. That's where we look inside the body with something resembling a long thin tube, with a camera attached to the end.
Method
It has a light, and lens for viewing, and may have a tool to remove tissue
There are 2 potential procedures, including:
Anterior rhinoscopy, where the rhinoscope is advanced through the nose to examine the nasal cavity
Posterior rhinoscopy, where the rhinoscope is advanced through the mouth to examine the back of the nasal cavity above the soft palate
Endoscopic endonasal surgery, is the use of an endoscope entered through the nose, fixes or removes brain defects, or tumors in the anterior skull base
Transsphenoidal surgery, is the use of an endoscope and/or other surgical instruments into the part of the brain, by going through the nose and sphenoid bone (butterfly-shaped bone at the base of the skull) into the sphenoidal sinus cavity. It is used to remove tumors of the pituitary gland
Functional endoscopic sinus surgery, is surgical Tx of sinusitis and nasal polyps, including bacterial, fungal, recurrent acute, and chronic sinus problems. it uses nasal endoscopes to restore drainage of the paranasal sinuses and ventilation of the nasal cavity
