Bradypnea (from Greek "brady" meaning "slow", "pnea" meaning "breath" is abnormally slow RR.

Dx

Definition depends upon the Pt's age, including:

  • <1yo, <30bpm
  • <3yo, <25bpm
  • <12yo, <20bpm
  • <50yo, <12bpm
  • >50yo, <13bpm
Sx
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting (or near-fainting)
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Chest pains
  • SOB
  • Memory impairment or confusion
  • Tiring easily during any physical activity
Cause
  • OSA
  • Inflammatory disease (e.g. lupus or rheumatic fever)
  • Drugs, e.g. drugs for other arrhythmias, psychosis, and HTN
  • Cardiological:
    • Degeneration of heart tissue due to aging
    • Damage to tissues in the heart from heart attack or heart disease
    • HTN
    • Congenital heart defect
    • Myocarditis (heart tissue infection)
    • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland)
    • Imbalance of electrolytes (i.e. minerals required to conduct electrical impulses)
Tx
  • ABC's, including supplemental oxygen
  • Surgery to correct dangerous ICP
